About Our Voyage
We’re taking a year to explore the world on our bikes as a family.
Some of our goals include experiencing life with completely different routines and obligations than at home, living with different cultures and histories, and learning what it takes to stray from the path and forge our own; problem-solving on the spot, handling risks, and learning to be flexible and adapt, and make the most of our situation, come what may.
We don’t see the trip as a vacation. It’s more like we’re taking a sabbatical. Some of us are working full-time from our computers, while others will be taking online classes, writing, and studying music. We’re cycling with musical instruments in tow, with the hope of continuing to practice and play as a family, and if we have the chance, to share some music with others. And, of course, we are all taking on the task of documenting this trip.
Our plan? Good question. We should have it fully laid out in about a year :) Our rough idea at the moment is to spend the first three months cycling from Brussels, Belgium to Lisbon, Portugal, before moving on to Taiwan, then Southeast Asia, Japan, and finally wrapping up in Turkey. But due to several factors, Covid not among the least important, all our plans could be thrown to the wind tomorrow, and then it’s back to the drawing board. We have to be ready to deal with that too.
Some of our favorite mottos are: “we’ll figure it out,” “leave it better than you found it,” and “para atrás ni pa’ tomar vuelito,” (roughly, "no going back, not even to build momentum") although we might have to fall back on that last one at some point.
